Four producers, four nationalities, four highly personal interpretations of “Guilty,” the aggressive, industrial track released by W.LV.S (Manu le Malin & Electric Rescue) in 2022. RABBeAT, Scalameriya, Kilbourne, and Ghost In The Machine are at the helm of this EP of fierce and unique remixes.
« I know that I’m guilty » : these few words, spoken calmly but firmly, like a solemn declaration, pierced through the industrial techno of ‘Guilty’. The track by W.LV.S (the duo formed by Manu le Malin and Electric Rescue), released on Astropolis Records in 2022, does not pass judgment or bother with moral questions. It simply highlights – or rather darkens – the confession of Wayne C. Doty, an American murderer still on death row awaiting execution, whose inner turmoil was revealed in the Netflix series ‘I Am A Killer’. This was the cold and martial soundtrack of violence – that of the killer, and that of the executioners and their electric chairs.
It’s not easy to make such a story your own. But the remixers of this third release from MKNK have succeeded, each in their own way, in embodying ‘Guilty’, drawing on their artistic backgrounds, and their countries of origin. New Yorker Kilbourne, on the B-side, adds an exhilarating gimmick and a brighter atmosphere, almost making the vocals disappear, as if to counteract the deleterious effects of current American politics and invite us to dance on a pile of ashes. RABBeAT, on the other hand, lets loose. Opening side A, he adds a devastating beat to an already angry original track, before a melodic and dreamy break, typical of the Lyon-based producer, giving the impression of a respite… that is short-lived.
Then Scalameriya, Serbian by birth and Italian by adoption, creates an impeccable syncopated techno rhythm. It’s hard not to be moved by this groove, by this synth that reprises the original theme like thunder rumbling, by this sci-fi atmosphere that cuts the vocals up like an industrial meat grinder. And to close the EP, Dutch duo Ghost In The Machine, formed by Frank Nitzinsky (aka Eye-D, half of The Outside Agency) and Nils van Lingen (Mindustries), have brought out the anvils for a rave remix that puts the honesty of the condemned back at the heart of the message – and the club.
Four remakes mastered by Deathmachine, some more violent than others, techno or hardcore, but invariably personal. A reflection of the identity Manu le Malin wanted for MKNK: a label with broad ideas, welcoming new talent as well as established artists, as long as the offering is sincere.

Le titre de W.LV.S (le duo formé par Manu le Malin et Electric Rescue), sorti sur Astropolis Records en 2022, ne porte pas de jugement, ne s’embarrasse pas de questions morales. Il met simplement en lumière – ou plutôt en noirceur – la confession de Wayne C. Doty, meurtrier américain attendant encore aujourd’hui dans le couloir de la mort, dont les états d’âme ont été révélés dans la série Netflix I Am A Killer. La bande-son froide et martiale de la violence – celle du tueur, et celle des bourreaux et de leurs chaises électriques.
S’approprier une telle histoire n’est pas simple. Mais les remixeurs de cette troisième sortie made in MKNK ont réussi, chacun à leur manière, à incarner « Guilty », forts de leurs backgrounds artistiques, de leur pays d’origine aussi. La New-Yorkaise Kilbourne, en face B, y appose un gimmick grisant et une ambiance plus lumineuse, faisant presque disparaître les vocaux d’origine, comme pour contrecarrer les effets délétères de la politique américaine actuelle et inviter à danser sur un tas de cendres. RABBeAT, au contraire, lâche les chiens. Ouvrant la face A, il ajoute un pied dévastateur à un morceau original déjà sacrément fâché, avant qu’un break mélodique et rêveur, typique du producteur lyonnais, donne l’impression d’un répit… de courte durée.
Puis le Serbe et Italien d’adoption Scalameriya crée une impeccable rythmique techno syncopée. Difficile de ne pas broncher face à ce groove, face à ce synthé reprenant le thème original comme un tonnerre qui gronde, face à cette atmosphère SF qui découpe les vocaux au hachoir industriel. Et pour clôturer l’EP, les Néerlandais de Ghost In The Machine, le duo formé par Frank Nitzinsky (alias Eye-D, moitié de The Outside Agency) et Nils van Lingen (Mindustries), ont sorti les enclumes, pour un remix rave remettant l’honnêteté du condamné au cœur du propos – et du club.
Quatre relectures masterisées par Deathmachine, plus ou moins violentes, plus ou moins techno ou hardcore, mais invariablement personnelles. Le reflet de l’identité voulue par Manu le Malin pour MKNK : un label aux idées larges, accueillant les nouveaux talents comme les valeurs sûres, tant que la proposition est sincère.
